We are committed to empowering young women across Sri Lanka to become confident leaders and advocates for social justice, gender equality, peace and human rights. Through the Sithie Tiruchelvam Women’s Fellowship Programme, initiated in 2011, we support young, Tamil-speaking women to strengthen their leadership, broaden their perspectives and actively contribute to positive change in their communities.
We believe that lasting social change is achieved when women are empowered with knowledge, skills and opportunities to lead. The Fellowship brings together young women from diverse communities and provides them with opportunities for training, dialogue, networking and local and international exposure. Through feminist perspectives, leadership development and regional exchanges, Fellows are equipped to understand and challenge systemic inequalities, promote gender justice and contribute to more inclusive and peaceful communities.
Across the four cohorts, Fellows have represented districts including Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Jaffna, Mannar, Batticaloa and Nuwara Eliya. The programme has also created opportunities for them to connect beyond Sri Lanka, including regional exposure and learning exchanges in India.
Participants have developed their leadership, advocacy and community engagement skills while building lasting networks with other women working for social justice, gender equality, peace and human rights.
