The inaugural cohort of the Sithie Tiruchelvam Women’s Fellowship Programme launched as a pilot initiative to test, evaluate, and refine our training approach prior to its official public launch. To assemble our first group of emerging leaders, we partnered directly with grassroots organizations across the Northern and Eastern provinces, including RWF (Vavuniya), VOVCOD (Trincomalee), and SHADE (Vavuniya), to nominate potential candidates. Following a competitive panel review, we expanded our initial intake from three to five Fellows to accommodate exceptional applicants and ensure diverse community representation, including Muslim community inclusion through the Jeewathies Center for Social Advancement (JCSE).
Held in Tamil Nadu, India, this pilot combined foundational capacity building with immersive regional exposure. Fellows completed an intensive three-day workshop in Karaikudi, organized in partnership with NIRNAYA and DROPSS, focusing on leadership fundamentals and community mobilization. To ground these concepts in practice, we facilitated a series of learning exchanges with leading civil society organizations and academic institutions, including OFfERR, TRUPA, EKTA, and the Indira Gandhi National Open University. These visits provided our first cohort with vital comparative perspectives on grassroots advocacy, gender justice, and rights-based community organizing.
